This restaurant never disappoints. I work close by and first learned of it when they had a wild game menu. Since eating here in 2019 I have been back multiple times, and this is a key stop for me when relatives visit. Additionally, during the pandemic they had a wonderful and reasonably-priced to-go menu.
Amazing food and service. Tim was a great bartender willing to talk or have you alone depending on your wants. Food was incredible. Definitely worth eating there when you visit DC.
Wonderful! Special birthday desert complementary. Love it! Thank you!!!
Reuniting with friends we made while we lived in Germany at Cafe Berlin was a great decision—the fresh and authentic food, the playful German ambiance added to the fun of our celebration.
We chose to eat inside. Waitstaff were friendly and engaging.
Usually I complain about staff asking frequently “how’s everything. That certainly was not the case here. Long waits between courses, refills..,
Delicious, authentic German food, great dry Rieslings and Gruner Veltliner, great beers, convivial and relaxed patio, good service and value. A wonderful, comforting, high-quality go-to.
Great food highly recommend.
Best German food in DC.
Enjoyed our experience. The server was a little younger than ideal and seemed a little confused regarding serving drinks, but the food was excellent and we enjoyed dining outside.
After an awkward seating- the server placed the 4 of us on a table for 6 and had to be persuaded to seat us on an appropriate table, the service improved greatly. It was pleasant and accommodating.
The drinks were great and the pretzels were really good. The rest of our meal was only passable. The pork schnitzel and beef saurerbraten were decent, the spratzel was tasty. However, the trout was over-vinegared, the rostii was soggy and the potato salad wears soupy and unappetizing. The tasty apple strudel improved the meal but not enough.
A bit disappointed, over all, despite great ambience on a pleasantly warm summer evening.
Our dinner experience was wonderful. Our out-of-town guests were very impressed. Thank you!
great experience: highly recommended! the food was excellent.
The staff was very attendive, nice and quite atmosphe.
Food and beer excellent! Always a great place to eat!
Excellent, basically comfort food. The German potato salad was delish. As well as the chic cordon bleu
I frequent Cafe Berlin as my go-to spot every 3 weeks. It serves a well-prepared, tasty, genuine German menu that includes delicious seasonal concoctions by the talented and creative chef, who uses local products. There are a variety of imported draught German beers and nice wines from the region. Plus the unbelievable desserts - Yumm! But more about that further below.
The staff are friendly and conversational. They are casual (in the most comfortable sense of the word), and they are observant but not intrusive. I typically sit on the terrace outside, under the large blue Paulaner canopy.
Yesterday evening I decided upon an appetizer of geraeuchtere Forelle, a Summer addition to the menu. The slices of trout were nicely browned and juicy, and they lay atop a wonderful cucumber salad and Roesti, a small potato cake. My main dish was Kabeljau (cod), co-mingled with heirloom tomatoes and roasted baby Yukon gold potatoes. The dressing was vaguely sweet and tangy. The portions at Cafe Berlin are the right size - much more than minimalist, and less than what has become the American standard of super-size. The dishes leave plenty of room for a dessert. Yes, finally! Almost. To go along with the meal, I chose a half-liter of a refreshingly light and fresh Hefe-Weizen imported from Paulaner, one of Munich’s larger breweries. I knew it wouldn’t over-power the trout or the Kabeljau. Nor did it.
Now on to the fabulous, cinnamon-scented, finely layered and crusted Apfelstrudel, fresh from the oven, and served alongside house-made ice cream. Perfectly browned small slices of pink lady apples filled the strudel. This dessert was larger than others on the menu. I enjoyed one of the four slices of strudel and brought the rest home. And guess what! I just warmed a second slice in a low oven (300 deg F) for 10 minutes, and it was as lovely as if freshly baked. Still crusty and perfect.
So hurry and go! Cafe Berlin books up a few days in advance. You’ll find me there.
What a refreshing change from other restaurants, with German food!!! There was a nice selection and we each had something different and they were both delicious! Can’t wait for another trip to the DC area so we can visit Cafe Berlin again!
We're so glad this Hill gem weathered COVID and seems to be doing well. Great beer selection with authentic German fare. The Hühnerschnitzel is my kryptonite. Service is over the top attentive, and the outdoor dining options are great.
As usual Cafe Berlin did not let us down. We often take guests and family to our neighborhood outdoor restaurant to enjoy the perks of living urban and living in Capitol Hill.
Eaten here many times over the years. Service was quite slow last night. We’re there over 2 hours and waited 30 minutes to order and what seemed too long for our food. Also the Hill crowd that comes to drink gets a bit out hand. Not sure what can be done, maybe a limit on party size. Also we ordered a steak. It came over cooked from our order, steamed instead of seared, and a butter knife wasn’t sufficient to cut it.
Disappointing for regulars bringing out of town guests on a $200 bill.
I wish the Hungarian goulash was available year-round, but still consistent food, and delicious beers!
We love this restaurant - the outside garden transports us to Germany!
Go here every time we visit DC. Reminds us of all our trips to Germany over the years.
Great place to have authentic German food with great service at a reasonable price.
Excellent food and service. We informed the staff in advance that one person had an allergy issue and the hostess immediately explained the options for us after seating us. The space was a little tight as they were trying to fit as many tables outdoors as possible and we happened to be in the high traffic area, but overall everything was fantastic and I’d definitely go back.
Good food, great service. Nice selection of German Beers
Restaurant has potential. Little underwhelmed by food and service.
Visit with friends
Wonderful German restaurant on Capitol Hill. Best schnitzel in town.
Servers were overwhelmed with too many guests and not enough waiters/waitresses. We waited very, very long time for first round of drinks and appetizer. Server forgot to bring a soup appetizer as well. Food is good, but service is lacking unfortuantely
Delightful outside dining with a feeling of being in the lawn of a German home.
A really great meal!!!!!
Sauerbraten was very good!
Get the strudel!
Server was friendly but she disappeared a lot. Maybe she was covering both inside and outside.
I would definitely come again
As always a delight. Food and service were excellent.
Thanks for your feedback!
Food was mediocre. We were seated in the back dining room at a table for six. We were just a couple. The room was stuffy and they had dehumidifiers or air conditioners on the floor. Server was friendly, food was prompt but bland. The ambience is on the patio, not inside.
Thanks for taking time to leave us feedback! Sorry we did not live up to your expectations. The units in our dining rooms are HEPA air filtration units put in place when we re-opened indoor dining to add additional protection for our staff and customers. Best, Clytie
I asked the owner if we could move to a table outside since the inside was musty and moldy and she said they were full although there were empty tables outdoors. Within 15 min the party that was seated by us inside moved outdoors !! After our meal I spoke to the owner and said that was unacceptable specially because I have severe allergies and she moved another table outdoors, she said “oh I am sorry ! “ That was it ! I said “well that is not helpful” she out of the blue yelled at me in front of everyone and said: “god dammed you try and run a restaurant in a pandemic!” imagine how my digestion was ! Rude people and server !
We differ in how we recall the exchange. After being seated you did ask to move outdoors, but we had reservations for all outdoor tables. Later, a reservation for outdoors cancelled, I sent a staff member to your table to move your party. It wasn't until you were leaving & started yelling at me that I realized the wrong party was moved. I explained the mistake & apologized profusely & you continued to yell that "it wasn't good enough." I regret loosing my cool & apologize that mistakes were made
Cafe Berlin never disappoints, and our server, Bianca is always attentive and friendly. It has a really lovely outdoor patio with perfect ambiance.
Excellent German spezialitaeten, especially schnitzels and kartoffelsalat. Beer is also decent. Highly recommended!
The food wasn't too authentic for German fare.
Ambience very nice though!
Thanks so much for taking time to send us feedback! We regret that we failed to live up to your expectations. The food in German varies wildly between regions. Our Chef and Co-owner was born, raised, and trained on the Islands of Germany (Rugen and Sylt) and worked for many years in the Black Forest and Bavaria before immigrating to the United States. He certainly puts his stamp on all of our dishes but they are very much in line with meals we have eaten when visiting family there.
The food was excellent! On previous visits we received great service. This time, the server (male) was surly and did not respond reasonably to requests. For example, my wife aske him to compare two beers and he asked what she meant. In other places, the server usually responds with comments about hops, flavors, alcohol content, etc. In this case he ultimately offered to bring a taster but never did so.
He never inquired about the quality of the food and the dirty dishes stayed on our table for about ten minutes until another server cleared the table. We asked for desert menus and he bought one menu for the table. He brought the check but another server ran the card and returned it to the table. We really like Cafe Berlin. However, when we return we will request another server.
Thanks so much for taking time to give us your feedback. We are glad you enjoyed your food and apologize that our service failed to live up to our standards. We will endeavor to do better and hope you will give us another chance!
Cafe Berlin has been a favorite of mine for many years. It is one of a handful of German restaurants in the DC Metro area - for that reason alone, it would merit supporting any way possible. But, this restaurant has earned more than just being another German foodie's outpost in this area - it has a style all its own. The food is good (and plentiful) and the service and atmosphere are great.
