Poole’s is a modern diner with reimagined comfort food. It originally opened as Poole’s Pie Shop in 1945, and since then has been a staple of Raleigh's food scene where generations of locals have gathered to dine, celebrate, and rub elbows. Since 2007, Poole’s has been under the stewardship of chef Ashley Christensen and her team, who have honored the spirit of the diner’s comfort food roots while elevating the culinary experience with an emphasis on seasonal, locally produced ingredients and attention to detail. The dedication to warm hospitality, exceptional flavors, and creative cooking has earned her two James Beard Foundation awards. Poole’s has grown over the years, expanding from the original footprint at 426 S. McDowell into the building next door. Guests can enjoy dinner seven nights a week at the original Double Horseshoe counter or the Main Dining Room. For a quick drink or snack, the lounge is the perfect place.

This restaurant, from renowned chef Ashley Christensen, is dedicated to the technique of cooking with wood fire. You can find a delicious wood-fired steak, of course; but much of the menu showcases the element of fire in more subtle ways. Don't miss dishes like roasted oysters with preserved lemon and chili butter; rabbit cotechino with embered kale relish, mustard frills, smoked rabbit jus; and luxurious pastas like the buttery agnolotti with grilled maitake, chèvre, lemon thyme.The space itself is sophisticated and sleek, and full of character. The building was established in 1907 and has formerly housed a funeral home and a bank (the restaurant's name is a hat tip to these former tenants). Don't miss the beverage program, including the extensive wine list. The wine cellar is housed in a former bank vault in the basement.
Oak Steakhouse Raleigh continues the legacy of the original Oak Steakhouse in Charleston, SC, with a modern take on the classic steakhouse. Located in the Warehouse District of downtown Raleigh, Oak Steakhouse offers an innovative approach to steakhouse dining, serving farm-fresh dishes alongside steakhouse classics.
Under the direction of executive chef Todd Woods, Oak's menu highlights the restaurant's relationship with local farmers and purveyors. To complement the menu, Oak's expansive wine list features California Cabernet and Old World reds, including a selection of Italian and Spanish wines, as well as an array of artisan domestic wines. In celebration of Raleigh's local brewery scene, Oak Steakhouse showcases local brews alongside domestic and international beers. Classic and creative, seasonal cocktails are also on the menu.
Anchored on the corner of Brookside Drive at Glascock Street, Big Cat is a multi-concept operation featuring day-to-night offerings for East Mordecai, Oakwood and the surrounding family-centric neighborhoods it will serve. Big Cat will offer table-service dining, a full bar, an ample all-season, covered and heated outdoor patio, a small-footprint market connecting the counter with the bar/tavern, offering a curated wine selection, everyday needs for families, and prepared foods to-go.Under Kumar’s direction, the kitchen will execute an approachable, fun and adventurous menu; slow roasted, lightly smoked North Carolina heritage chickens, big crunchy salads next to hearty braises in the winter and marinated Mediterranean summer vegetables with grilled lamb or seafood in the summer. A small daytime menu, including sandwiches heartily stuffed with house pickles and global flavors, as well as soft serve, will be available year-round.
