Essy's Carriage House
Wine by the glass is not very appealing.
Quiet comfortable relaxing with good food and service
We had friends visiting from Chicago who were staying in Balston, so we checked Open Table to see restaurants close to their hotel and decided on Essy's because of the reviews. We were pleasantly surprised! The food, atmosphere and service were all outstanding. Two of us tried the beef short ribs and two had the crab cakes. You did not need a knife to cut the beef, it was so tender. The crab cakes were also delicious, not too much filler mostly crab meat. And Essy, our host was great! We will definitely be going back.
We returned to Essy’s after a long time because a friend raved about the crab cakes. We shared the mini crab cakes as an appetizer and they were indeed very, very good - full of jumbo lump crab. Salads were crisp and fresh and the house dressing was excellent. Entrees were well prepared and enjoyed. We will return in a much, much shorter time.
What a great dining experience! Food was great and Essy made us all feel so welcome. Highly recommend if you are looking for great food in a nice setting with a casual atmosphere
Essy is our neighborhood restaurant and we have always enjoyed the service, food and ambience.
Tried Essy's for Father's Day Brunch for the first time, excellent as always. Great selection of Brunch classics, everyone enjoyed their selections (french toast, ham/cheese omelette, eggs benedict, quiche).
Been going to Essy's for many years, meeting one of my best and oldest friends. The service is friendly and prompt, and the food, as I'm concerned is some of the best I've ever had.
Friendly, quiet and lovely food!
The food are made to order & it’s good. But I did not enjoy the ambience and the smell of the restaurant.
Excellent food and friendly service. Highly recommend.
Excellent menu options Everything tasted fresh and enjoyable
Such a great little Cherrydale gem! Essy is quick to crack a joke and always so friendly.
Wonderful! Great neighborhood, locally owned and operated restaurant! Tried and true for many years!
Great food, very good ambience! Will definitely go back there.
Such nice people. Good food. We love supporting local businesses and will be back!
Read really good reviews and can see it would be a nice place for the folks in the local area. Very nice people. Nice white table cloths and flower on the table nice touch. Salad of lettuce, tomato and cucumber was fresh and crisp. Had the seafood platter - which was very disappointing especially for the price. The scallops and prawns were dark deep fried - hard/over cooked. The fish breading was not dark, but was very ordinary. The crab cake which I did not have friend was good. I'm sorry to say based on what I had I would not go again. Really nice people though.
Great food; great value. Would go back there for future celebrations.
We have always seen Essy’s but never stopped in until we made a Valentine’s Day reservation. It is a charming restaurant with FABULOUS crab cakes (apparently their specialty). Also enjoyed the double-thick lamb chops. We weren’t in a hurry but things were slow with only one waitress who was supported by Essy himself. His wife was in the kitchen and probably had her hands full with the busier-than-usual night so there might have been some pacing in even getting orders back to the kitchen. But we weren’t in a hurry so we just embraced the moment. Wished my surf ‘n turf crab cake/filet mignon had a sauce available for the beef (bernaise would have been ideal) but nothing offered or apparent on the menu. The lamb was enhanced with mint jelly but we had to ask for it. We will return on a non- holiday night.
Excellent service! Perfectly sized portions. Excellent food
Their crabcakes are pretty good! Jumbo lump with no filler. Don't know many places who use only crab meat in their crabcakes, so A+ with the main course. There was a small salad provided, but for the price I wish they offered some sort of vegetable along side of the small amount of potatoes on the plate.
It was nice to be able to communicate with my date, and not have to compete with crowds of people on a Friday evening. It was definitely slow, but enjoyable. The server was very personable, and attentive while meeting our needs. Also, you have to try the chocolate cake for desert!
I had a very enjoyable evening at Essys with my folks and sister. We have lived in Arlington a long time but had never tried it. Everyone was pleasantly surprised! The salads were lovely and fresh, the bread was yummy, and the main courses were all very good. It is a quiet place with only about 10 tables, so not the kind of place to go for a hopping evening, but very pleasant all around, with great service. We will be back!
We had a great Christmas Day dinner. Everything was really wonderful
Christmas dinner. Special fixed menu soup - salad - main - dessert. Food was ok (fresh) nothing really outstanding. Clearly a large clientele of regulars who greated Essy (a character.) I would try it again with their regular menu. I was told, by a regular, they have a great burger. The other customers were friendly and interactive with our group of first timers. Has parking.
What a quirky, delicious place. Is it hip and trendy? No. Is it comfortable and cool? Yes. Is it a fast-moving, bustling place? No. Will you be glad you made the trip? Yes. Thanks, Essy, for a wonderful time with my husband and two friends. You’re a unique spot and host. Stay that way.
We live in Arlington and pass Essy's all the time and decided to go there for dinner with out of town friends on a Friday evening. The restaurant was not crowded and after a group of diners left, we had the place to ourselves. We were not disappointed. The salads were fresh, dinner was fresh, well prepared and beautifully presented. Terrific wine list. I am on a special diet to heal my throat and the chef was very accommodating by preparing my Branzino perfectly. We will definitely return to this place. The waiter is a hoot!
Wonderful way to spend Thanksgiving or any occasion
Four stars for service & noise only due to Thanksgiving crowd. MUST TRY the pumpkin soup if available, even our persnickety teen loved it. Will be returning to have a non-holiday dinner soon!
Everything was great, except that it was extremely crowded. People came in through the back and the side doors. Those coming through the back door did not know where or how to check in, so many waited by the exit from the kitchen in front of an area where a man appeared to be assigning tables. It became momentarily quite crowded. An elderly man came out of the kitchen and got angry at the people who were waiting there. Evidently, he wanted them to sit down at some empty tables in the back. The people were confused because they had not checked in with anyone. I was stunned at that behavior; however, the man who appeared to be assigning tables intervened, and that was the end of the incident. THIS INCIDENT SHOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED; NEVERTHELESS, THE TOTAL EXPERIENCE STILL RATED THE RESTAURANT FIVE STARTS IN MY OPINION.
Never got any cornbread on Thanksgiving afternoon, even though it was listed on the menu.
Took my father here for Thanksgiving dinner. Good was amazing!!! Would recommend.
First time visiting Essy's and was impressed with an extensive menu, good wines and the most pleasant owner. i will be a regular there for many years to come.
I love this restaurant, my favorite in the entire dc area.
We went our last night in the DC area. We actually had Essy as our server. What a great guy. He made us laugh and once he found out we were from Wisconsin, he had some stories for us. The food was wonderful. If we ever go back, we will definitely come back here and we'll recommend it anyone who goes there.
Their crab cake is the best, it is a must try. I get it every time I go and it has yet to disappoint.
Essy is an awesome host!
The food and service is always top notch. Ingredients are always fresh, and they offer the best crab cakes in the metropolitan area, at a very reasonable price. This restaurant never disappoints.
This unassuming restaurant on a busy intersection is quiet and cozy on the inside. The proprieter Essy is a unique character, and he made us feel right at home on a slow Saturday night. The large menu does old school luxury staples well; go for the escargot, served with delicious crusty bread, the perfectly cooked prime rib, and the succulent lamb chops. Essy makes a mean Manhattan and a fine margharita. We're glad we chose the Carriage House.
