Set in the former 1930s Hitchin ballroom, on the first floor, Hermitage Rd restaurant & bar boasts a seasonal, award winning and sustainable premium food offer, and a bar renowned for it's bespoke cocktails, quality wine and beer range. Award-winning food - Best Premium Food, Good Food Guide, Food Made Good sustainability status.

Additionally we also have a street-level Nyetimber collaboration wine bar, which can be hired exclusively, open Friday & Saturdays only from 5pm.

Our coffee shop has also expanded and offers an amazing space to socialise and/or work, open 7 days a week, offering dine-in or take-away bagels and PACT Coffee, plus various size meeting rooms for hire. The coffee shop is also available for evening hire as a venue for private parties, corporate bashes, book launches etc.

    The Hermitage was recommended by a few people in town and we had to try it. When we got there, we were greeted by Riju the general manager. He spent some time with us, explaining the history of the building and showing us around the restaurant The food and the drinks are the best we’ve had since visiting this area. We will come again here on our next visit and highly recommend.

    Great venue jazz and dine night excellent atmosphere Steak had a very large section of fat I would not expect that at the price of the cut 700G £95 Cooked slightly under sent back and still a little bloody however would be fine for others slightly high price range but only because of the amount of fat on the cut Would visit again if got a cut of meat i expect for the price slightly let the fine dining experience down

    Lovely overall experience. It was difficult to hear conversation at times but nice & clean, modern decor & great menu. However that said my risotto was not cooked, the rice had a crunch to it, I told the waitress but because I had eaten most of it I wasn't offered any compensation. The risotto was very tasty despite the crunch and they always have amazing fresh oysters which were lovely. I have eaten here many times before and in fact am booked again to go on Thursday.

    We've been to Hermitage quite a few times this year (2026) and decided to try the Sunday Lunch. As we don't eat red meat very often (maybe 4 times a year) we tried the Roast Beef which was sublime, so tender and beautifully cooked along with all the extras including excellent Yorkshire puddings and vegetables cooked topwerfectiopn. We would highly recommend the Hermitage and along with really good service we had a memorable visit for a one day early birthday celebration

    I had the roast pork on my last visit and it was fantastic but this time it was fatty and smothered in gravy. The roast potatoes were underdone too. The vegetarian guests really enjoyed the aubergine roast. Eton Mess superb.

    I’m exceptionally sad to write this as was our favourite place for a roast I’ve found in twenty years. We planned my celebration of cancer free to come and eat. First on arrival the table wasn’t ready so was asked to go to bar and I said could I start the tab and yes the table number is 28. Then on the bar transaction informed that I’m unable to be so paid. Then waited ten min to go ask ask about the table and she’d forgotten about us and had to remind her of all information and then she checked again see was free. This showed us that the management of this and us wasn’t be managed or monitored. We were met by a lovely lady who was amazing and was very attentive taking orders and menus etc, It was exceptionally busy and loud and left quite a long time waiting for starters and another long time waiting for a drink, I asked another waiter for a menu and never saw him again. I eventually got one from our waitress and then waited a long time for our mains . I had duck and partner lamb. The duck was stone cold and I had to ask someone again for service and there was no one around, it was the waiter we asked for a drinks menu, there was no politeness or apology just taken …, then after a short while our waitress noted and asked what happened, asked if being sorted we didn’t know? So chased acknowledged and sorted for me ,but my partners was eating alone and then I had to. We had desserts and coffee too as we didn’t wish to ruin the night as too meaninful . I paid in full as I’d no energy to make a fuss even though it’s fallen far far short on all fronts. Then Ive woken to stomach cramps and toilet visits all night and today cramps and stomach issues. Partners not been well but not as volatile as myself. So sad and very expensive upset we hoped for much better.

    Generally speaking this was booked on the basis of previous reviews. Suffice to say that we had a draughty table, in an inconvenient location [adjacent to the till] and we were subjected to large groups pushing past our table. Though the staff were generally friendly and attentive, the service suffered from too many large groups having booked the same date. Its understandable that the venue has no control over who books but in reality people booking should be notified of large groups being entertained as this alters people perception and the ambiance of the place. When the food arrived it was warm and bland - most of the posts seen prior to the booking [and my experience of the group] were that this should be good. It was not. What should have been a nice leisurely lunch was an expensive let down. Not what I'd expect from this hospitality group. We will not be booking the Hermitage again.
