ONE OF THE MOST DISAPPOINTING EVENINGS MY WIFE AND I HAVE EXPERIENCED. MANAGER DIDN'T EVEN MAKE THE TIME TO CONVEY WITH US. FOOD WAS SALTY COLD OVER MARINATED. WE WERE BOTH FEELING UNWELL YESTERDAY. WORST EXPERIENCE EVER. ONLY PUT A 500GM RACK ASIDE FOR BOTH OF US AFTER ADVISING BOTH IN SPECIAL ORDER CONDITIONS THROUGH YOUR BOOKING AS WELL AS RING THE VENUE ON FRIDAY AFTERNOON . JUST AS WELL CAUSE THE FOOD WAS DISGUSTING. WELL TELL ALL MY FRIEND'S AND FAMILY AND SOCIAL MEDIA NOT TO VISIT.
We've been long time fans of fans hank's, never disappointed before, didn't disappoint this time
Opentable wrote to us asserting that we did not show up for our reservation in which we arrived 15mins earlier. The email we received blatantly pointed this out - an attempt at trying to place blame or apply pressure on us for something that did not occur.
To add salt to the wound, the food wasn’t that great either.
Pls confirm with the restaurant again before contacting us assuming that we’re people off the streets that do not hold reservations or have any courtesy to call ahead if we were not planning to show up.
The whole booking experience and coupled with a disappointing meal has ruined our weekend truly.
Quality service and amazing food. Went to the restaurant quite late and did not have time to order a lot of food from the kitchen, but the stuff threw something together quickly and still provided us with a selection of meats that was absolutely delicious. The staff were also very welcoming and friendly and prompt at service.

Love the food here and we had friends from Texas who know their bbq food. However there were no Lamb ribs or Romaine salad left and they had run out of 3 different wines the girls wanted to drink and wouldn’t serve anything else by the glass. Frustrating
I have been to quite a few of the American BBQ places and the food here I don't believe is up to scratch. Presentation is good, some of the dishes were good but the beef ribs were sold out at 6pm on a Friday which isn't good enough. Brisket was a bit dry.
Good food, great beer selection, nice and relaxed. The roof bar above is great too.
Briskit was amazing. Pork ribs were a little dry though.
Amazing to find good tender brisket this far from Texas. The brisket is superb and needs no sauce. We also enjoyed the pulled pork. Did not order the pork ribs as we prefer the smaller meatier baby backs, but they looked tender and tasty. The cole slaw was unusual but full of flavor. The side pickles and onions are an attempt to be unique which is fine. I’d prefer the plain version. Great spot. We approve although very pricey compared to home.
Food was good, menu lacked variety. The pulled pork was luke warm, however everything tasted good. Busy, but expected on Valentine's day. Servcie was great. Would recommend.
Great spot to catch up with work colleagues over lunch. The lunch menu offers some lower cost items (sandwiches) for those that find the regular menu a bit expensive. We had mostly sandwiches with some sides to share and that worked out really well. Bit disappointed to find we were charged for mayo to have with our chips, when most places offer free aioli with chips - but this is a minor quibble. Can highly recommend the brisket sandwich for fall apart deliciousness - and book a window seat overlooking Bourke St for extra atmosphere.

Great setting and environment. A little disappointed that the offer of water for a table of 8 ( it arrived in 3 open carafe's) did not mention that we were being charged for whatever tap/post mix it came out of.
Other than that, we had the set menu @$35 and there was flawless BBQ, great cornbread, chips, potato salad, beans and we were all left feeling replete with some meat left on the platter!
After being shown to table, unfortunately ignored by waitress. However male staff member made up for it when we explained we had a show to get to.
Ordered the Pulled Pork Shoulder Special and it didn't disappoint. Would bother with the Lamb Ribs again, way too fatty and didn't really get any cherry/sweet flavour. Coleslaw with chipotle dressing was very tasty and went well with the meats, as did the BBQ fries.
Love the idea of share plates.
Love Fancy Hanks, the pre ordered Pork Ribs are the go!

The ribs were so tough we couldn't eat them. When we complained we were told this was 'Kansas' style. I feel certain the ribs in Kansas aren't like slabs of rubber. We were only offered drinks once and the start. The sides were nice but for $90 for tough inedible ribs was not.
Delicious! Loved every aspect. Staff with gorgeous. The fit out was on point. The chips are beyond!
Service was excellent and the food was delicious and was served very quickly. The only thing we were disappointed about was for 2 people we couldn’t order any set menus anymore as there now have to be minimum 4 people so makes it more expensive for us. Food was still delicious as always.
Unfortunately fancy hanks failed to deliver at 5pm Last Friday
Afternoon. Booked in with 7 others for an early dinner before the theatre. No one else in the restaurant until 6pm and service was appalling. Had to ask for menus, more drinks, more serviettes etc Food esp meat dishes are overpriced. Macaroni cheese not hot. Table was rocky and when we asked to have it fixed staff made a half hearted effort. Have eaten there before but Sorry Hank but things have gone downhill

no need for interrogation about allergies , if its stated on your website you cater to vegans, its not chips and cauliflower - if asked to check please entertain the request.

Sensational quality food. Experienced staff whereby you don't have to worry about your order or if they know what food they're serving.
Fancy Hanks was featured on a TV show and having experienced American Barbeque in the USA on several occasions we decided to give it a go. On a positive note, the food was very good (4.5/5) and had the same aroma and flavours that we had previously experienced. Cost was $69 per head and included a number of starters and two mains - slow cooked beef and pulled pork - as well as some salads and of course fries. Obviously we had enough to fill some growing boys but I wouldn't say that it was amazing value for money. Drinks were typical city (higher) prices.
Fancy Hanks has a lot of potential but IMO it misses the mark in a couple of cosmetic areas. The cafe style chairs were uncomfortable and the table presentation was very ordinary. To get to the toilets you have to go up a couple of flights of dingy stairs and they look grubby as do the ones leading up to the restaurant. When my husband went, there were dirty dishes on a servery and when he came back they were still there! Wasn't very appetising and the place wasn't really busy. The staff were pleasant and the background music - naturally American - was at just the right level for atmosphere and conversation. I would recommend Fancy Hanks to the under 40's but probably not to over 50s.
Just the fact that they hide the price of the ribs on the online menu is already a huge turn of, many items on the menu were already sold out by 8:30 pm.we thought it was tasteful meat but very greedy on the prices,Sydney is a bit ahead in American bbq style in my opinion and it’s also cheaper and more generous too

One of the waitresses was great. Another split wine over me and did not apologise.
Overall the food was no hot when it came out and overall too sweet - didnt need dessert after the meal.
If you're in Melbourne and haven't tried American style beef brisket before, this is the place to go.
Service used to be much better. The food on that day was not as good as when we dined there on the other 3 occasions. Plus they ran out of beef ribs and milk bun. Also annoying that they squeezed 5 of us in a spot for 4 when they were not even busy. Disappointing especially when we brought our inter-state friends to dine there.
The food was very fresh and tasty and easy to enjoy (nothing to frighten the teenagers) the lamb ribs were great, although we had actually reserved the pork ribs only to be told they'd sold them earlier! (It's a good idea to pre book the ribs as they're a definite highlight and seem to sell out early). The room is beautiful with a stunning view over the canopy of trees along Bourne St but could do with some more soft surfaces as it's very noisy. Great place for a family meal, would definitely eat there again.
Good food but BlueBonnet is much better. Brisket was dry and ribs not as tender as they should have been. Enjoyable but don't go with high expectations.

Once again Fancy Hanks did not disappoint! I’d suggest sticking to the ala carte menu and making sure you get the Boston beans, corn bread along with the brisket, pork sausage and boudin. Service not the best, and enough poor reviews about it that if it was going to change it would have by now. Accept it for what it is and enjoy the delicious dinner. Will be back.
