An elegant 10-course dinner.

Kaiseki is a form of Japanese cooking that draws its philosophy from tea ceremony traditions in 16th-century Kyoto, Japan. At its core is the belief that we are at our best when we experience every moment with one another as if it were a once-in-a-lifetime gathering. As a culinary expression, Kaiseki is a reflection of the season—an intricate rhythm of taste and texture brought forth in a progression of courses.

Kaiseki Furukawa’s founding chef and co-owner, Shigeyuki Furukawa, was born in Japan and became a Kaiseki chef in Tokyo. He then moved to Kyoto, so he could work directly with master Kaiseki chefs to cultivate a still deeper understanding of the cuisine. It has been Chef Furukawa’s lifelong dream to bring the pure form of this cooking to his own restaurant. After five years in development, Kaiseki Furukawa opened in 2017 at 33 North First Avenue, Minneapolis, MN, Second Floor.

This was a once in a lifetime experience and I am so glad that Minnesota has this gem. The food was absolutely delicious, we ate things that were cooked in ways that I would've never imagined, for example, vinegar jelly?! It was delightful. I can’t express in words how amazing this restaurant is, you’ll just have to try but make sure to save it for a special occasion because it is $$$$ but worth every cent.

This was our second time here, and we absolutely loved it. It was for our 5th anniversary. Everyone is very friendly, and the food is delicious. I feel like every plate is an adventure. Thank you for making our anniversary special.

We were sat 45 minutes after our reservation time. We were told that our bar tab would be taken card of due the long wait—they still charged us for appetizers and two drinks. The experience was fun but the food was either bland or too salty. Very small portions and several had repeated elements. Overall we were disappointed with the food but the service at the bar and once we were seated in the restaurant were excellent. I would not recommend unless you enjoy lots of courses that are geletin based.

A really great experience, including the pace of the meal, the service, the story behind each course, and the quality of the food. The food is very traditional Japanese so of course you have to like that.

It was delicious! The chef puts so much thought into presentation and taste. It is a very classy restaurant and the Kaiseki ryori was spot on!

This is not just the best Japanese restaurant in the upper midwest, but it is also one of the best restaurants of any cuisine in the region. Kaiseki is a wonderful, beautiful, delicious, and entertaining experience.

This was, without a doubt, the best dining experience I have had in Minnesota. I have had a traditional Kaiseki meal in Miyajima, Japan (Iwaso Ryokan), and I think this was better. We did this multi course meal with wine/sake pairing on a quiet Thursday night. The Kaiseki dining area is separate from the whiskey bar and sushi bar downstairs. It is quiet and our table felt secluded and private. We were greeted by our delightful waitress dressed in a beautiful kimono. She served the meal and provided informative details about the meal and drinks. The meal had about 10 courses with pairings. The portions were perfect. The food was beautifully presented with the subtle beauty that I love about Japan. The drinks were served in antique glasses and expertly complemented the food. The courses were delicious, diverse, and somehow all came together in this wonderful meal. Highly recommended.

Every course was a delight! Each, the perfect balance of flavor and texture. Lovely presentation and perfectly sized portions. Service was great too! Many special and personal touches to celebrate my husband’s birthday. This is our second visit and we will return for more special occasions and exceptional experiences!
