Sol Mar Restaurant & Marisqueira is one of the leading seafood restaurants in New Jersey. It is family operated, opened in 1957, and focused on authentic Portuguese & Mediterranean cuisines. The interior of Sol-Mar is handcrafted as carefully as the menu, as diners are transported across the Atlantic as soon as they walk through the doors thanks to the authentic decor and style of the dining room. It is located just a few blocks from Newark Penn Station, close to Newark International Airport, in the famous neighborhood of Ironbound.
Sol Mar’s menu experience featuring the finest seafood catch from regional coasts and international waters in Portugal and all over the world is showcased at your table. Diners who aren't feeling the taste of seafood can still order other dishes such as grilled porterhouse steak, pork chops in garlic sauce, and chicken marsala. We left this meal frustrated, mostly with how the check was handled. The seafood paella was not authentic. It was really just seafood on top of yellow rice, with none of the crispy crust on the bottom that a real paella should have. The larger issue was the upselling. A soft cheese arrived at the table as we sat down, and only afterward did we learn it carried a charge. We then ordered the cheese plate listed on the menu at $4 and were served something else entirely, a $25 plate that appears nowhere on the menu and that we never asked for. When we pointed this out with the bill, the manager came over and told us that since we had eaten it, we had to pay for it. We eventually received a partial credit, but the issue was never the money. It was being charged $25 for an item we could not have ordered even if we wanted to, and then being told it was our fault. Nothing about the service felt welcoming, and no one seemed interested in making the visit a good one. We would not return or recommend it.

As soon as we got there, they knew that we were there too, say bon voyage to my cousin who is traveling the world for the next 15 months. So they definitely read the open table requests. And the waiter was very engaging and wanted to discuss everything with my cousin.

I have been coming to this restaurant for the past 5-6 years and the food, service have always being great and the prices reasonable. Now, the problem was during my diiner yesterday when at least 2-3 mouse decided to join us for dinner. I live in California and decide to celebrate a birthday there prior to my return. However, my experience was sadly ruined by having to shared with the rodants. When I rbought it up to the server, at first they kind ignored me, when I continue they stated, they are furmigating in a regular basis. I found this not accetable and the restaurant should close down until this problem completely is elimiated. I am not sure how I feel about returing there in my next trip.

As always a great time at Sol-Mar and right after Portugal beat Uzbekistan 5-0! Highly recommend for large parties and celebrations. Food and service are always 10-10!

My recent lunch at Sol Mar was a great experience! I met with a client, and we both enjoyed the meal. The food was great, fresh and flavorful dishes that exceeded our expectations. The service was particularly attentive, making sure we had everything we needed without being intrusive. Overall, I highly recommend Sol Mar for anyone looking for a fantastic dining experience in the area.
