I was excited to try The Alcove for our anniversary. It was our first visit. Parking was a bit hard to find near the restaurant, so we parked on the circle and walked a block or so to the restaurant. The restaurant was busy and the hostess elected to sit us in a booth that was in somewhat of an alcove within the restaurant to give us more privacy/quieter atmosphere. That was very nice. The restaurant is beautiful. It is ornately decorated with some velvet booths, velvet patterned wallpaper, crystal chandeliers, paintings and dark woodwork. It is lovely and in very good condition. The staff was friendly and our waiter was attentive. I really enjoyed the overall experience but the food was below my expectations and overall was just average. The salad that is included with most meals was excellent. The lettuce was fresh and the dressing had a good flavor. The side of black pepper risotto was also excellent, although a somewhat small portion. The filet mignon was a bit disappointing. My husband and I both ordered it and both were slightly overcooked, mine more than his (we ordered medium and medium-rare). The broccolini side was good but not exceptional. For dessert, I had the chocolate lava cake and he had the apple crisp. My husband really enjoyed the apple crisp, noting that there were lots of apples and the only downside was that the container was rather small which made it difficult to eat. I was disappointed in the lava cake, mainly because the defining feature of a lava cake is the runny center. That's the whole point. My cake was almost completely cooked through with a slight gel texture to the batter in the very center. The cake was okay as a cake but was not really a lava cake.

Waitress and all personnel were helpful and courteous and made it convenient for my wife in wheelchair.

Wonderful dinner and wonderful experience! Ambience, beautiful and quiet and our waitress is amazing! Highly recommend this restaurant!

We had a 5:30 reservation & was seated immediately. Once we ordered drinks, it took close to 20 mins. To receive w/server indicating the bar was 'slammed'. Generally the food was good, and service was good. The Mt. Vernon location is excellent-a great small town with so much to see w/in walking distance!

We visit the alcove quite frequently. Who would believe such a Jim was buried in the middle of Mount Vernon. The staff is wonderful.

Last 2x we’ve been here they couldn’t cook my steak to medium well . It came out redder than my husband‘s medium steak. My steak spent at least 10 minutes back in the kitchen as my husband ate his meal. Then it was just ruined. The steak & the ambience of trying to eat our anniversary dinner together. Waitress said they did NOT have apple crisp when we asked , but table next to us got it. When we asked about it, she ended up bringing it to us, but it was unfortunate that it was on their dessert menu and she was telling us they didn’t have it. Very unfortunate that we spent over $60 on a filet mignon that the chef couldn’t cook correctly. All in all an unfortunate bad experience. We will not be going back.

Absolutely would recommend this restaurant. Food was amazing. Service was excellent. I understand why this restaurant is ranked 75th in the nation.

The food was great! Our waiter was really good. The only complaint is that I put on the reservation that it was an anniversary dinner and it took the table next to us telling their waiter that before anyone acknowledged it. What’s the point in putting that if places don’t care to read it. I don’t care about free stuff it is about the fact it was our 30th Anniversary dinner and some acknowledgment of that makes the night out that much better to me. Also I would’ve preferred a little more private seating. I’m not a fan of these tables where one side is a bench and it feels like you’re sitting with other people that aren’t part of your party.
