The Ivy on the Square
Welcoming staff, good choice on the menu , wines reasonably priced.
Food portion size varied considerably between myself and the person who I was eating with.
I was on business so did not raise this at the time, my salmon main course portion was tiny with no accompaniments other than a very small cucumber salad and no side dishes were recommended when the order was taken. The person I ate with had a very large chicken salad and bizarrely as he was eating it was then bought another piece of chicken on a side plate as the chef felt his portion size was too small.
Poor value and to be honest all very embarrassing.
I ate again when I returned to my desk
Very nice lunch , atmosphere good and friendly knowledgable staff. First visit but not the last
Had a great dinner here, good food and wonderful service.
Great location in heart of Edinburgh and perfectly located to get around and about. Service excellent and attentive. Good value though not cheap. Food very good and “Ivy typical” though my one comment is that the Edinburgh menus seemed very fish biased (diff to previous ones experienced?) which is not so good if you prefer meat.
Visited now on 3 occasions, once for lunch with family and twice for an evening meal with friends. The staff are friendly, approachable and well informed. It is a good varied menu making it suitable for different tastes, including those trying to choose healthy options. It is a welcoming, comfortable and modern environment which adds to your enjoyment of your meal. During the day it is suitable for a relaxing lunch and in the evening it has a good happy buzz about it, again adding to your enjoyment of the experience. This is a quality restaurant which deserves it's place in the heart of Edinburgh (St.Andrew's Square). I will definitely be back!
Fabulous experience. I've been before but first time for my wife and she loved it. Food was excellent, service outstanding and atmosphere wonderful. If we had to be critical (it's hard to be) it would be the use of plastic straws vs paper or even no straw. That aside it was first class.
Anazing service food well oresented and cooked recommend to anyone
Really nice restaurant with a relaxed atmosphere. Our table wasn’t ready when we arrived so we were seated at the bar and given a a complimentary glass of fizz. Staff were very friendly and helpful. We had afternoon tea which was very nice - and filling! Would highly recommend
Despite being very busy, the service was very good and attentive, and the food was excellent, tasty and fresh
Will be back in the future !
Poor disability awareness. Staff inattentive at door - didn’t at first notice me struggling with crutches. Asked to take my coat at door but I needed to get crutches off so they just led me to our table and left me. Didn’t help me off with my coat or offer to hang it, so it was left on my chair. No offer of a drink while waiting for my friends, only the tap water. Had to summon a waiter to ask what the fish of the day and specials were. Long wait to order. We really had to actively seek out waiters. Usually staff look for opportunities to sell us more drinks but we gave up on our server showing any interest in us. After paying, the staff again disappeared, no help to get coat on. Thankfully nearby diner stood up and moved his chair, helped me get out of area, and I struggled again with the door on the way out. Food was nice but pricy for what it was and service well below par. Spent £138 on lunch so I think some attentiveness should be expected. They were very busy but they had plenty of staff . I don’t see us returning.
Had a special birthday lunch experience recently with friends. Everything was lovely including the chocolate birthday cake. Highly recommend for a girls lunch.
Great choice for Dry January treat - loads of fancy kinds of tea, juices and coolers. Fabulous all round.
An excellent meal to celebrate a birthday with friends. Good service, and very good food. My guests enjoyed their first visit to the Ivy and it was all in all a fun, laughter filled evening. The starters were all very good, though one guest felt he did not get many prawns in his prawn cocktail ( they took it off the bill without us even asking which demonstrates what a good place it is). Mains were excellent and we recommend the apple tart tarting and chocolate bombe.
Excellently cooked steak. Don’t like having to order sides at a very expensive extra cost.
Waiter was polite and efficient
Table at the end of the row, directly in front of the bar made it noisy from cocktail shakers and busy with traffic. Darkly lit made reading the menu difficult so I used the torch on my phone.
Drink had to be sent back, not as described on menu. Food was bland and overpriced
Treated my husband to his birthday meal. I have visited several times before, this was his first visit and he was not disappointed. The staff were very pleasant and attentive without being overbearing. The food was delicious. I mentioned it was his birthday and he got a Happy Birthday raspberry tart. A great dining experience.
We are regulars to The Ivy and it never fails to impress in all areas. Special mention to our waitress, who was superb
I had a lovely breakfast at the Ivy, the service was great! The waiters were very friendly, made sure our needs were met at all times and had a down to Earth approach. There was a lot of nice small touches as well such as the napkin being folded when you left the table for when you come back.
The staff at the Ivy are always very friendly and attentive which makes the visit well worth it. The food is excellent and I would recommend going there for breakfast as this is the only meal I’ve had there on the occasions that I’ve been.
Our first visit to an Ivy other than the original, which is our favourite and a must visit for us when in London. We were pleased to find some of the usual favourites from the original Ivy’s menu. In particular, my favourite dessert of the iced berries was available. In London now on request. Our other dessert , chocolate done/bombed extremely good. Waiting staff very attentive.
Was at the restaurant for a 50th birthday treat. First time of being there and it was a great experience. The staff were very attentive and the food was lovely. Also a couple of nice touches of being wished a happy birthday by our waiter and the little happy birthday chocolate on the dessert. Will definitely be back.
We had a wonderful evening at the Ivy.
The service was excellent from all the waiting staff, especially Maitre de who was efficient and welcoming, I wish I could remember his name however I do recall he came from Malaga Spain.
We had delicious food and the atmosphere was elegant yet cosy.
All in all a very special evening, thank you.
we realise we had reached our allotted 2 hour time limit but felt we could have been offered somewhere else to sit and relax over drink or coffee rather than to be told twice (in matter of minutes) that our table was needed. Upstairs had no customers so we would have been happy to sit and enjoy remainder of night rather than have to find hotel. It was reasonably cold evening out and as our table was by large window did not feel it was comfortably warm.
Birthday gathering with a very tasty set lunch with a cocktail.
Lovely lunch. Good menu choices, excellent service and great ambience.
Great food, service & ambiance. We loved our afternoon tea and will be back.
We sat upstairs this time and enjoyed the view. Although there are many tables, a degree of intimacy is possible, especially in the booths in the centre of the room. As ever, the menu is so enticing I could work my way through it. This time we had the set lunch choices and the three of us enjoyed what we had very much indeed. The attention to detail in flavours and garnishes is outstanding and try as I might, I can never get past the white onion soup as a starter. Smooth and creamy, served with a bit of style. Try it.
This is the second time I that been to The Ivy on the Square for lunch and again I have been very impressed. The food is delicious and the ambiance smart and comfortable. It’s a very very nice place to go for a meal without being outrageously expensive. I couldn’t recommend it more.
We had a very good meal. Unfortunately there was no sea bass which my guest was particularly looking forward to. Light also very poor for seeing the menu. Waiters too much in your face for no reason e.g. Folding napkins for no reason and taking away glasses too quickly. Apart from that a very good experience.
Food was very good and service was excellent. There were 5 in our party and we all really enjoyed our meals. Would recommend and will return
Daughters 18th, very special dinner for her! No Happy Birthday greeting, disappointing! No photos permitted, so no memory. Extremely overpriced.
My boyfriend and I booked a table for lunch time and had a great dining experience from start to finish. The staff were friendly and attentive throughout, however we both felt slightly ignored after being given our main courses. We were evidently finished and had been for a while and our plates were not lifted for quite a while. However, this is such a minor thing due to the quality of the overall experience!
The food was delicious, the drinks - particularly the cocktails - were fab as well.
Will be returning for sure.
Another excellent meal at this very nice restaurant. Smart but but not too posh. Friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere, and very nice food. Good value for what you get.
Beautiful food and drinks, and the service was great
Food expensive when you have to add on veggies etc to your main meal. Wine list not that great.
Restaurant situated in a great position though we were unfortunately facing a wall. The food was average tasting and one of the main courses ordered Shepherds pie was the size of a starter. As you might of expected the alcohol was quite expensive. The waiter service was excellent and could not be faulted. We thought the food should have been better. We will try again if the menu changes.
Although the food was very tasty, I could have done with a couple more prawns (there were two prawns in my prawn and monkfish curry) and a couple more small chunks of monkfish. I also consider 9.75 pounds for a gin a tonic to be well overpriced. Otherwise is was a good meal.
Amazing meal service and ambience on 5th January. Have already highly recommend ed to friends and family
Beautiful afternoon tea in the most luxurious surroundings. Just what what was needed to celebrate a family members retirement.
