We like Vai a lot, but this meal was a bit disappointing. There were 4 of us, and 3 of us ordered the veal scallopini, a special that sounded great. But it was pounded too thin, overcooked, and somewhat lacking in sauce or flavor. On the other hand, the Brussel sprouts and octopus were great.
Food is above average but overpriced $32 for a plate of pasta is just outrageous
Not enough servers, poorly managed
Best Neighborhood restaurant on the UWS - without doubt. Sense of arrival os always genuine and gracious. Service is unobtrusive and anticipatory. I didn't even see my water glass get filled and drink about 4 or 5 glasses over a meal. The food is artful and perfectly presented. Wine selection and wine service is elegant and value oriented. My only complaint, it was cold outside that night... but inside we felt warm, welcomed and appreciated as they always make you feel.
very good service, food was really tasty and the environment was nice
The food is delicious, but there are very few menu selections, and they are all high priced. For example, there were only 2 pasta items, each more than $30 for small, appetizer-size portions. The fish was excellent, with a side dish of beautifully cooked broccoli, but even with the (very good) bread, we did not feel like we’d eaten a satisfying dinner for which the bill was more than $50 each. One odd note: an Italian restaurant with almost no Italian wine? Since someone is cooking very well, I hope the management can consider dinner from the perspective of the diner and offer a few more reasonable options.
Love this place!!!
Such a hidden gem on UWS. Food was excellent, service amazing, Cant wait to go again!
Small portions for pasta which is a disappointment at the prices. Brussel sprouts were a let down. Cool atmosphere. Fish was great as was tuna appetizer.
The food and service are always excellent. We love going to Vai!!!
Restaurant was freezing cold. Food was sub par, yet uber expensive. Would not recommend.
Fantastic!! The owner/manager is an excellent host He made us feel very welcome and well taken care of. The filet is the best! Arctic char is perfectly prepared. The scallops are some of the best I ever had.
We just love everything g about VAI
Delicious meal. We ordered the burrata and hamachi appetizers and the branzino and lobster tagliatelle entrees. Everything tasted great, as did the grapefruit and Thai basil martini. I hope to find my way to the UWS soon to eat here again.
Warm and friendly, with nice wine list. Candlelit with exposed brick walls, menu changes but some highlights are the crudo and also the pasta (if burrata ravioli on menu, go for it). They often start with grilled sturdy bread and some kind of spread (recently, creamy/fresh ricotta). The octopus is very good and so is the burrata starter with grapes. sounds out there, but it really works.
Four of us met for dinner Friday at Vai and we can't wait to go back. The environment had a simple/minimal and trendy feel. The host was friendly and welcoming. We had the arctic char, filet of beef, Bronzino and scallops, everyone enjoyed the dishes. The portions were a little on the "nouvelle" side but this is a plus for some of us. The pear dessert was also tasty.
The food, as always, was delicious. Our waiter, Loris, was engaging and knowledgeable. I hesitate to dine there because the noise level can be deafening.
Always good food, sometimes a wee bit crowded, as most places on the uws; I will keep going back.
Always a great night
Attentive service and excellent food. Very much enjoyed our dinner.
Very good food and the service was truly exceptional. Looking forward to going back again!
Very short menu with mostly fish options. Only two pastas. That said every dish was delicious and nicely presented. More than adequate size portions.
Another great place by the same owner of Course, a must to go to when in NY
Vai continues to impress with it's immaculate service and exquisite cuisine. This restaurant is further proof that you don't need a book for a menu to provide a consistently high quality culinary experience in a charming atmosphere. Looking forward to returning again in the near future.
Loris always takes great care of me. Hamachi is divine as is the pasta. Good cocktails.
Great food, great service
A holiday tradition.
Vai is a great neighborhood restaurant. Wonderful place for drinks and sharing food.
Wow that was one delicious dinner! 4 diners, 2 had veal chops and 2 had scallops - each amazing! Shared the Brussels sprouts and octopus appetizers, wow! Not cheap but totally worth it. Would've had dessert but all they had was a pear tart and we weren't feelin' it. Will definitely be back 🙂
Vai’s website is very deceptive, giving the impression that it’s a spacious venue with an extensive menu. Not so at all. The restaurant is tiny and the menu does not even include a red sauce. When asked about this, our server simply said “yes, we know. We select a few items from the website menu and change them from time to time.” We had a party of 8, including two kids who were hard pressed to find an appealing dish. No spaghetti or meatballs here! Seating was an uncomfortable long skinny table quite near the door, the only table that could accommodate us. We’ll never go back.
The burrata ravioli are to die for. The food is just amazing, the stuff is very friendly and the overall experience is just superb. A little jem in the UWS
Loved our host
Wonderful food and service as always at Spuntino! Vince has created a great vibe with a wonderful staff and always outstanding cuisine!
food, service, freshness all excellent - great staff, good bartender
Food was great
Just bring the pork chop back on the menu
Best meal I had in a long time in Manhattan.
Everything was amazing. Especially the octopus and scallops
Great staff and the food was cooked perfectly and presented beautifully! Best meal in NYC during our trip!!
Food was delicious. From the octopus app to the pear tart dessert. We had reservations but had to wait while our table was set up. But was given a complimentary glass of wine.
Very disappointing. The food was tasty enough, but nothing special. My daughter ordered a scallop appetizer for $29. It came with three scallops. I ordered chicken under a brick which tasted as though it wasn’t fully cooked. My Sangria was sour (though I did ask for less sugar—I wished they recommended something else). The waitstaff was just not that nice, Other than a woman who was serving the meals. Opentable notes that this is under $30. It is not. It was expensive and not worth it.
