Since the redesign the dining area has merged into the bar. This meant we couldn't hear a thing whilst eating dinner as it sounded like we were at a football ground. The roast dinner is okay but it is not a nice atmosphere, certainly not somewhere you could take young children.
The restaurant was much too noisy and we will never go there again. There was music through one set of speakers and too huge televisions broadcasting different sports channels and four televisions above the bar in the middle of the restaurant. We met up with friends and we just could not talk with them. There was no way we could enjoy coffee at the table after lunch. The refurbishment has totally changed this hotel.
The service and staff were great but food was not cooked properly and went back to the kitchen twice but burger was still raw in the middle!
My husband ended up eating his birthday meal alone!
Food was lovely, and really reasonable price nice environment.
Not so fussed on the layout, as no one really greets you for your table booking, also the service was appalling.
We cleared our own plates, ordered our own drinks. Had to chase waiters several times, would visit again purely for the food but don’t expect much from the service they stand around talking more than anything
Especially if your seated at the back against the awful green wall.
Difficult to summarise as we were on a special deal including room + dinner, which was exceptionally good value. Otherwise we thought prices were high for this kind of establishment (tables for diners at one end of sports bar). Starter + main + cheapest bottle of wine = £70+ for two. Food was, however, generally good and plentiful (beef skewer overcooked) and service was friendly and helpful. The meal was enjoyable and the bar relatively quiet and uncrowded (once the football was over) but we would be unlikely to return. I get the impression that restaurant business is not a high priority here.
Outstanding value. High quality food, great choice and variety. Very tasty. Modern, fresh décor. Service levels ok. Great experience.
Very disappointed when visiting here last Sunday 17/2/2019. Firstly we were left standing waiting for a table. When we were finally seated, our table was dirty and so was a lot of the other tables around us which was not very nice to look at. We booked our table for 5pm and unfortunately the food seemed as it was sitting all afternoon. When I was asked how everything was I informed the young lad that the food wasn't very good, he confirmed my suspicion that the food had been there all afternoon and told me that if I wanted it fresh then I was to book for 1pm in future! The restaurant was very noisy and there were kids doing laps as if it was some sort of play area. Overall it was a awful experience. I paid my bill in full and left with no intention of returning. Such a shame as I've always enjoyed eating here in the past and also recommended it to family and friends.
We had a lovely time for a Valentines treat, our waitress Alice wasn’t very polite and welcoming. However the service was very slow and we found ourselfs lookinng around often for service. During our meal we could hear multiple other diners complaining about the wait for their food also.
Food and ambience were good, staff were polite and helpful. We seemed to be served by a polite young man, but he disappeared during our main course (think he must have finished his shift). There was a delay in getting our plates cleared, so I got up and asked for help. So all in all experience was good, but staff could be more attentive.
Great value Sunday carvery! Lots of options and always refilling the trimmings. It’s not 5 star dining, but it is a good quality Sunday roast!
Having been here many of times in the past and enjoyed every experience in the lovely family friendly restaurant. It has been ruined by a winter makeover which it can only be classed now as a loud sports bar with a Carvery attached to the side. Nice if that’s what what your looking for but not for a nice Sunday lunch with family that you cant hear to speak too. Back to the Toby next time, would not recommend to friends or family. Real shame !!!!
This is the second time I have eaten at the restaurant, food was amazing but yet again let down by the very poor and slow service of the people working there
Beware, this venue has been refurbished and it is a backwards step, they have created a noisy sports venue in a large school type dining hall. Sports screens dotted everywhere, we didn't go to watch sport, we went for a relaxing meal, it was hardly that. Food of poor quality, starters and puddings what you would pick up from a service station cafeteria. Carvery food was ok but not good value considering the very poor starters and puddings. We booked for a Birthday meal as had been before and had thought that the food was of good quality and value. I felt embarrassed that I had brought my family here to be honest. When we arrived we waited for 10 minutes to be seated, no one there to meet and greet, we had to queue at the main reception desk to find out how we find our table, they just said for us to find someone at the bar. The disinterested staff that we were faced with made me want to walk out but it was a birthday treat so didn't want to disappoint. Wish we had left as feel I have wasted a lot of money for one of the worst meals in the worst setting that I have ever had.
Although the food was really good, we had to physically go and get a waitress to attend to us twice. Considering this is a buffet style dinner we didn't think that was acceptable. As we had a BOGOF offer, the price was good. Would go back again though.
Lovely Sunday lunch. Plenty of food and beautifully cooked. Choice of starters and desert was excellent. Hotel prices for drinks though which is to be expected. Lovely atmosphere and staff attentive.
The only thing that didn’t make it a 5 star revue was that the plates were cold
Service was fast and efficient, main course was great , only let down was the cheesecake, more of a dish of mush!
It’s very loud and busy , not a problem for us , but if you’re wanting a quiet dinner it wouldn’t be ideal . Very friendly and helpful staff at the bar and restaurant.
Worst meal ever. Service did not exist and carvery was not edible. No deserts available from buffet.
Poor , food order arrived wrong , drinks order arrived wrong , no coffee available after the meal.
Could not have a conversation as sky sports was blasting out football throughout the bar and restaurant.
The service was exceptionally poor.
We had to go and ask twice to be served the soup and when it arrived it was luke warm.
We had to clear our table before we could get the carvery.
The chef needs to understand we are the customer and at least greet the customer.
Love how it’s all been refurbished, staff are really lovely, we went for the Sunday cavery and was really disappointed with the food unfortunately, 😞
The food was outstanding and the service was excellent. BUT with the bar and restaurant being a large open planned area, it was very noisy, we could not have a conversation above the noise of the bar. Also if you like tv’s everywhere to watch sport then it’s the place for you. The restaurant should have been separate from the noisy bar will not be rushing back for that reason.
Stayed for a night with my wife. On arrival we were upgraded to CLUB room for no apparent reason but quickly discovered the hot water was on the blink across the entire hotel and gym and it didn't come back on till the following day before we left.
The layout of the bar and restaurant have been changed since my last visit and it is now very impersonal and cold.
The staff at the bar/restaurant were poor to say the least. Our meals came out at different times to the other and after 10 minutes of waiting for a spoon to eat my dessert I gave up and used the one my wife had finished with.
I got bored of waiting for the staff to clear our plates so we got up and went to the bar. After an hour of being in the bar the waiter still hadn't noticed our departure so we got up and went to our room. He hadn't bothered to ask for my room number so how he knew who I was or how I paid for my meal is beyond me. Thankfully I was on Sunday Dining offer and had already paid but he would not have known that.
I won't be returning to this place again. Awful.
Put in a meeting room with some tables without cloths. Saw a waitress once or twice only. Food was good save for hot apple pie being cold. Place was generally messy and interrupted with tables moving and hoovering. Finally no one wanted to take payment. Not a good experience.
Disappointed is an understatement. Since my last visit they have changed the restaurant area into a bar/grill designed to entertain football fans with various positioned TV screens. Looks awful, and reminded me of something you expect at Pontins or Butlins. The old bar has been converted in to 3 small conference rooms. This is where we were led for our dining experience!! Awful. Carvery was served in the corridor, would you believe?!
Plates and food were also cold and poor service. Had to wait ages for our drinks order. No doubt they were too busy servng the football fans next door. I won't be back.
Had the Sunday Carvery, the food and service were excellence, Held in the meeting rooms nice surroundings and quiet. The best quality and value for the money Sunday Carvery I have had.
We went twice , once on Sunday 25th and the service and food was really good , I told everyone it was really nice and excellent value for money . So we decided to return on Sunday the 2nd and it couldn't be more different , the restaurant was loud and very very messy lots of tables full of plates and floors covered in food and crackers and general mess . We asked twice about our table and was told u can sit over there . You couldn't hear yourself think let alone a lone anyone else . We waited for 15 mins and nobody appeared to take drinks orders or to ask if we would like a hot starter . All waiters/ waitresses were standing around chatting to each other , hence I went to a waiter and asked if poss could we have a drink , residing to the thought we wouldn't be asked about starters we went and sorted ourselves out . We then had main and pudding still no waiters , nobody cleared our table . We now needed to pay , so I went to the bar to pay and waited 15 , bar staff looked a few times but didn't acknowledge us . In the end I asked to see a manager
Diabolical service, had a table reserved months in advance and when we arrived we were shown to a dirty, uncleared table. Staff didn’t know what they were doing and had zero customer service skills. Took ages for food to arrive and it was cold. Mussels were not cooked properly and the salad contained ropey tomato cores cut up. Huge private party meant it was extremely loud in the restaurant and due to the new layout (merger with the pub) we couldn’t hear each other speak. Horrific experience
Very enjoyable lunch just a shame the waiting staff had not been given full training. One instance was not asked if we wanted drinks. Another instance could not clear tables with confidence. Lastly the custard was filled to top of bowl and not half way. The staff did mention it was the first time they had poured custard and didn't know how much to give. The staff were very willing just not trained correctly, lets hope it will improve.
Poor service in the restaurant area now they have combined it with the pub and made it open plan.
I asked where our waitress had gone to be told she had gone home for the night! Service was shocking
Loved the Sunday Carvery and would go again but not the place to go for a quiet meal, with the Bar area being open plan to the restaurant and football on the screen it was very loud but didn’t spoil our visit though I would say very understaffed especially on a busy Sunday afternoon, having to wait for our booked table and again just waiting to order a drink.
The food was good, the organisation was poor, we were seated at the wrong table, drinks order was so long we went to the bar to collect it as we could see our order on the bar, Only two of us but when we came to pay the bill, attempted to charge us for four people. Expected better.
The service was very poor, had to clear the table ourselves, could of got five drinks from the bar the time we got one Serve to the table, when we got the bill the menu said kids eat free, the village said because the menu was for all of the chain of the hotel restaurants it does apply to all of them ,I thought if the menu Stated it,the restaurant should Honour what was in the menu , but no they made us pay for the children, I don’t mind paying for the children and I don’t expect not having to pay for our children. Whoever job it is to over looks, the Restaurants is doing a poor job
We went here on a Sunday. They offer 4 courses for £18.95 however there is no option to pay for only the main - which seems odd. There are very few dairy free options to accompany the carvery main course. As a result £18.95 felt very steep for the quality of just the roast. This coupled with the waiter not serving our drinks til after I had finished my main and waiting over half hour for a glass of water has put us off. It is a shame as the location is really good for us but we won’t be going back.
Noisey like a football bar lot of shouting veg hard, meat tough desserts not much choice Apple pie cold
Yorkshire puddings like a brick greasy roast potato watchers a few times before change was really disappointed on decline of food not suitable for a nice Sunday lunch.
Lovely food. But Sunday we booked a table. Arrived and they had no note of our table. So as a result we had to sit on a high table in the new bar area and with a baby sitting in a high chair was a pain. As he was so low to us. The starters were going so fast so resulted in us not getting much. No stuffing balls or yorkshire puddings when both me and the kids went up. They did finally come out way after we ate our dinner. It was a shame because the food was so nice. It was just so busy and a bit of a who could get the dinner the fastest.
Poor is the wrong word to describe our experience at the Village Grill, Village Hotel, Maidstone. Try Appalling. Restaurant Manager, we had to go and find her as No one was at the desk. When we did find her, she pointed to the Table. We waited for someone to come and take a drinks order after 10 minuets we decided that we would order from the bar instead. While waiting to be served at the bar, after a further 5 minuets a young lad came over and asked if anyone had taken a drinks order, so he took it. Waited approximately 20 minuets before he came back but only with some of the drinks. Some of us ordered Soup. However; we never did receive any soup. No one explained about where to go or how the Carvery worked. Very poor choice of starters, well unless you like fish!! so bread roll and butter for me then!! Plates were cold. Food not that hot either. Sweets, not much to choose from, Ice Cream Machine, ice cream looked as if it had been watered down and didn't even taste like ice cream.
Would we recommend - NO
Would we go back - NO
Used to be a great carvery
Poor organisation for being seated, no real front of house. Very noisy, just could not make a remmonedation based on my experience for someone else to eat there. I'm going back to the north pole for my carvery next time.
The Village restaurant having recently had a makeover was a wanna trendy bar food area. We went on a thursday evening and it wasn’t very busy at all. We had booked our table in advance. After being seated for too long we had to prompt staff to take our drinks order which took a further 20 mins to arrive and that was considering i had asked for water for the table because we were all thirsty. The menu is limited especially if you have dietary restrictions and we were told the our choice of steak was not possible. Out of 4 meals ordered, 2 were good, 1 fair and the steak kebab was tough and gristly. Later 2 dessert orders were taken and then the waiter came back to say that the mouse was not possible. I asked frustratedly what else WAS possible. He then disappeared, only to return with a dessert menu that he proceeded to stick directly under my nose whilst i was in the middle ofa converation with my guests. He belligerently told me that whatever was there on thr menu was what i could order, despite just telling us that the mouse was not possible. I found him extremely rude and unprofessional and i asked to see the manager. She was very pleasant and apologised on his behalf. She said she would endeavour to give them further training. I found the whole experience very unpleasant and do not expect to return at all.
We were waited on by two waiters and the other one was a pleasant youg man.
Very disappointed,,service very poor,do not like the open plan decor,,so noisy.
