Poor value for money. Limited menu. Very thin piece of rump steak and some fries poor value at £21
Quiet enjoyed the food and atmosphere but the staff were not friendly and rather abrupt. One of the party did not have the correct cutlery for the starter and the spoon finally arrived when everyone else had finished.
We always enjoy coming. We see it as our local.
Such a lovely place for lunch. Will definitely visit again.
Local pub - comfortable and nice bar area with squashy sofas and big open fire in the winter. Two eating areas - one more relaxed and pub like - the other more like a restaurant. Food can be a bit up and down but really good on my last visit 3 nights ago. Incredible chunky chips! On hot nights there is an outside area for drinks and eats. This pub is real asset to Charlbury and has not been over modernised.
Great place with lovely fresh food. The staff are spot on and they have got the ambiance just right.
Fantastic stay at The Bull Inn!
Evening meal was great, maybe just a little more choice be nice & the brekkie was great too! Lovely quaint little place.
Cant wait to come back!
Lovely lunch at this beautiful gastro pub in the middle of Oxfordshire countryside. Staff very attentitive and friendly, food delicious and overall good value, nice garden seating area and more formal restaurant inside.
Ordered bull platter and rib eye steak with salad. Bull platter was good. Steak was tough. Service slow. Restaurant is priced for better experience.
Service at our table was fine, but next door table ordered starters which still had not arrived after 45mins. They were not happy and rightly so. One gets the impression that Pack Taverns business model is to employ posh gap year students without much experience. That's fine if there is an experienced supervisor present who is very hands on and in overall control, but maybe it was their evening off?
Beautifully presented place with a great atmosphere , staff very friendly .
Portions enormous , almost too large
2 Complaints though Sorry
They had run out of NZ Sauvignon Blanc !
Also we weren’t told which items were no longer on the menu till we had chosen .... notvtoo clever as second choice is never good enough !
On a quiet Sunday evening, we had an exceptional English Sunday dinner. Beet salad followed by very generous serving of melt-in-your-mouth roast beef and Yorkshire puddings with all the trimmings. For dessert we chose the cheese tray which, too, was outstanding. Great service and ambience.
Some of the staff are absolutely fantastic and if they are in the pub working it has a great atmosphere, outside could do with a little cosying up with cushions and flowers etc
Lovely sitting in the sunny garden at The Bull. Food was delicious but service left a bit to be desired.
We're local and have and have had the same experience each time we've visited. Food is good, setting is lovely, service is poor. Consistently. We would be regulars if the service were better.
Ok but nothing very special. Menu is short and food average - small portion size too
Beautiful pub in a gorgeous village, staff were very customer friendly & could not have done enough for us. Would recommend The Bull to anyone, can’t wait to return
Our second visit and we have been very impressed by both the standard of food and the service. The staff are friendly, cheerful and attentive without being smothering. The added bonus is that it's not too far to travel either.
I have tried and tried to avoid leaving bad reviews for The Bull but recent experiences are repeatedly so disappointing. We have been back hoping things return to the previous high standard but sadly this does not seem to be happening. We were out for father's day on this occasion. They failed to order one of our meals, when they eventually all arrived, the portions were poor and the yorkshire puddings were shocking, with no rise, tiny and cake-like in texture. The gravy was delicious though. We had to ask a few times for the children's menus. This is not a cheap pub and to have service and food like this is no acceptable. When you go out to eat, you want food that is better than you can cook yourself. Please, please go back to your old high standards as we loved having a good place to eat in Charlbury.
Cleanliness of bar /restaurant needs addressed
We were staying in the area for 5 days and ate at the Bull three times, the main course food was not very good quality and very expensive for what you got - which was surprising as the restaurant took up most of the pub, so I thought they would have been focused on the food. However, it is located in a lovely spot, very pretty and the staff extremely welcoming, so I would definitely like to go back there but this time for a drink and just a starter - the delicious pea and mint salad!
I can with a party of 6 of us in total
And between us we had fish and chips, your legendary burgers, which were both excellent . I had the sea bass, which was unfortunately tasteless and the broth it came in had barely any flavour. My husband had the fish of the day which was very tasty , with a side of over cooked broccoli which had some over powering chilli/ paprika and the portion size (of his fish dish ) was very small.
I felt that this was uncharacteristic of the dining experiences we have had in the past so thought I would pass this on!
For the cost, we were a bit disappointed by the portion sizes and the burgers were dry. All of us expected to be blown away by the flavours and textures but unfortunately not. The fish was ok. However, the staff were wonderful, very friendly and attentive; the pub itself is tastefully decorated and has a great buzz about it.
Slow service considering we were in for an early booking of 6pm. The chips with the fish and chips were more like skins on wedges, they were not crispy, needed a lot of ketchup to stop them sticking in our throats! Asked for fries for the children's meals as they didn't like the chips but were charged extra for these. There is a 10% service charge added automatically, which considering the service and the over priced meals (£26 for a mediocre steak and fries - had to pay extra to have any veg) and disappointing chips - it was a bit presumptive.
This was local to where we were staying for a weekend break. Nice relaxed atmosphere, good food and friendly service.
We went for a family meal early evening on Bank Holiday Sunday. There were very few people in yet the service still left alot to be desired. They had sold out of about half of the dishes on the menu (which I understand happens on a sunny weekend) but it took three visits from the waitress and us asking is there anything else that you can't do, before we finally understood what was left. She did advise that the fish platter was still available but when we came to order it, it wasn't!! When the food came (and it came quickly!) it was nice although we can only think that they were spreading the sea bass thinly to make as many portions as possible as I had three small pieces (2cm x 4cm) in my sea bass broth. For £17 I expected alot more. We decided against desert after they only half cleared our table after the mains then left us for 10 minutes. We asked for the bill which came quickly but after waiting another 10 minutes to pay we ended up going to the bar and paying there! Not impressed at all, seemed like all style and no substance.
Went for family Sunday lunch. Great pub, fantastic garden, lovely village but food was disappointing. Most of us were underwhelmed at the quality of the food and my pudding was poor. One family member ordered John Dory fillet with roasted vegetables and potatoes. It was served as a Sunday roast with fish instead of meat. Fish should never be served with gravy & Yorkshire pudding in my humble view which made me question the chef a little! Fab place for a cosy winter drink or drink in the lovely garden but I wouldn’t eat there again.
Enjoyed another lovely lunch at the Bull Inn in Charlbury this bank holiday weekend, my second in about a year's time, before going on the 4 mile loop trail that begins and ends in Charlbury. Food was very good and service excellent, and they have a lovely beer garden out back, so it's a perfect place for a pint or a meal on a good weather day.
It is a bit pricey for lunch-- we were 3 people, nothing from the bar, only lunch and tea-- and the tab came to £60, so it's not a place I'd venture into very often. That said, the service was top-notch and the food was very good-- all three of us were very pleased with our meals, and the staff bent over backwards to accommodate us.
Date Night - so... we are living in Finstock and love The Plough and sometimes frequent The Bull. The Bull has now increased their prices with poor quality produce and rushed service I felt and stated I was at Macdonalds
Starter was frozen
Main was rushed and returned
Come on guys get a grip
Service here has really improved lately and there were some new things on the menu that I enjoyed (asparagus with poached egg and goats cheese soufflé.
The staff were very welcoming and helpful. Good internal and external ambiance and beers. The Bull has a good outside eating place, and is fresh and relaxing inside. Toilets are clean and well serviced. Very good but not outstanding.
The Bull In is a very charming pub in an old Cotswolds house and typical village, refurbished with a lovely contemporary contry style design. The staff is very friendly. I had the braised beef cheeks with kale and mash potatoe, and couldnt resist the passion fruit tart, both delicious. Cherry on the icing is a direct GWR train from Paddington to Charlbury station, a 5 mns walk from the Bull Inn. Nice outdoor dining space as well
We are locals and have had a number of really excellent meals in the Bull as recently as 2 weeks ago. The atmosphere in the Bull is always good as is the service. Unfortunately our experience this time was mediocre at best. One of our 5 strong party was served a beer which didn't taste right. His beer was replaced (from a new barrel) but again it wasn't as good as subsequent beers from the same barrel - I know because I had one. We were given the wrong bottle of wine which, in fairness was changed when I spotted the mistake. My wife and I ordered beef cheek. Mine was dry and quite tough. My son's french fries were undercooked. Others in the party said that their meals were OK, but since they were our guests it is hard to judge.
Great food with great atmosphere. Relaxed, no rushing and very enjoyable.
We regard the Bull as our local dining place and enjoy it for ourselves, and for taking family, Friends and guests. We are fortunate to have such a hospitable and excellent food centre in our midst.
Absolutely delicious food, the staff were very attentive and polite. Small menu with a good range of dishes. The ambiance within the restaurant was very charming and cosy. I would definitely recommend the bull for any occasion.
Very good pub restaurant. Lovely decor and ambience, very good staff and the food was absolutely delicious. I look forward to coming back soon
Food is usually good in this Cotswold pub/hotel but the meals my friend and I had on Tuesday evening were exceptional
He had the beef cheek and I had the Asian style hake. Both were top quality. The service was excellent but we were never rushed. The beer was good as always and I was happy with their selection of wine by the glass. Since this is my local I am very happy to give it a strong recommendation.
Lovely pub and ambience/decor. Staff very good and attentive and non-obtrusive. They were happy to make some cocktails for us too.
Both ordered the Rib Eye steak, I requested medium-well done, but unfortunately, a third of my steak was very red and fatty which meant I had to leave it. It was inedible. Very disappointing but as I was on a date, didn't want to make a fuss.
My tip is for an expensive steak, please ensure the steak is good quality and also cooked correctly. Perhaps part of the grill wasn't as hot?
Will be back though next week, just not having steak again.
Good food, ambience and friendly staff - a good place to eat
