The Poet at Matfield
Starter menu limited and menu overall fish-based and meat options not extensive.
Lamb option described as braised shoulder of lamb and rump but a cutlet was substituted for the rump. Despite that food beautifully presented and staff very attentive but in a laid back way. Raspberry soufflé perfect. Overall excellent and we will certainly return.
Amazing food, wines, service, attention to detail, as usual.
Excellent, best food I tried in this area. Made us feel very welcomed , we enjoyed our experience
could not fault every single mouthful ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS
Highly recommended and worth it despite the lack of parking.
Lovely meal attentive service but not rushed. Nice atmosphere
Lovely food, great service and welcoming atmosphere. We have had an evening meal here and also Sunday lunch, both excellent!
We had The Poet recommended to us and would certainly recommend to friends (and already have). Superb birthday meal for my daughter. The food was outstanding.
We'd never been before, only recently having heard of The Poet. A real treat and good to know there are more and more great places for food in Kent to eat at. Excellent service, delicious food and nice ambience.
Three of us had lunch one Saturday to celebrate my wife's birthday. We all had three courses and everything we had was excellent - served without fuss - and the set menu particularly was very good value. It was all rounded off with proper mint tea - a delight. We have been out for a number of celebratory meals recently but one at The Poet has been the best by far. Highly recommended.
Why go to London when you can have food this good in Matfield?
Excellent food, well presented and served by staff with very good inter-personal skills. Booking will avoid disappointment as it is popular.
Great food, great variety, loved the venue, service was friendly and knowledgeable. Will defiantly be going back
Amazing food, friendly, welcoming and attentive staff.
The best place to go for a Sunday roast... outstanding
Absolutely fabulous. Lovely roast. The only thing that spoilt it was there was a very loud family with screaming children in an adjacent table. Obviously this is not the fault of the restaurant but the family concerned! The poet never fails to please. The food is excellent. The service second to none.
Nothing to fault. The welcome is always excellent, food is great and lovely location. Really do look after you well!
We had a very friendly welcome and the good and wine was delicious
Good pub food, excellent choice of Gins. Overall an enjoyable evening.
Wonderful food. We go here often and are never disappointed. Service is excellent and nothing is too much trouble. What a gem of a restaurant.
Great meal, lovely atmosphere; outside space and inside space lovely. Beautiful wisteria outside. Will be back time and time again if it lives up to expectations next time :)
Very good food we will definitely be returning every plate was perfectly presented and tasted superb.
Amazing place to eat ,very professional staff and excellent food well done
The food was lovely-a rare steak cooked as I like it, delicate tasty tuna carpaccio and yummy sides. I would say this is a place to take your other half for a fancy lunch or dinner, to impress your parents or friends coming to visit. Best thing was that they sold Gavi de Gavi by the glass and carafe which is unheard of. Good selection of non alcoholic apperitifs as well. I live 10 minutes drive away and while we are moving house I’ve asked my husband to ensure we don’t move more than 10 minutes in any direction now that I have discovered it. Oh and they were so knowledgable about gluten free and while i couldn’t have the chips (boo) pretty much everything could be tailored and I had a great dauphinoise instead.
Overall a fantastic meal and experience , The only thing we would of changed was to be left longer between courses as it all seemed quite rushed .They were not trying to get another cover in after us so it seemed odd as to why courses were followed so quickly .
What a find! Very imaginative menu, beautifully presented food, engaging staff and exquisite touches that impressed us, for example hot dishes are presented by waiters wearing white gloves and the waiter passed the cork from the wine under his nose before allowing me to taste - I’ve not seen that sort of attention to detail for many a year in even the finest restaurants. I liked the furnishings too and the ladies room was spotless! Will definitely return.
Nice welcome perfect service delicious food good wine list not too stupidly pricey and we had asked for a table in the alcove because one person in our party has a severe hearing problem and we were given this table and this was brilliant for him and made a big difference to our enjoyment.
Good friendly service. Excellent food in just the right portions. Very pleasant expeerience
Superb food quality, speed of service and charm of staff. Small and very crowded, but this emphasises its popularity!
This is such a fabulous place - if I could give it a higher mark I would! Amazing food, lovely staff - and white glove service (I don't remember the last time I saw that in the UK!).
I would give it higher marks if I could!!
Almost everything about our dinner here was perfect. The food was very interesting - inventive, and delicious flavours, perfectly cooked (I had halibut, which is often poorly cooked. i.e overcooked, but not here). Often, one course will stand out from the others, or there'll be a 'weak' course - but again, not here; there was perfect balance between the courses, each as interesting and delicious as the other, so difficult to achieve. We picked this restaurant from among a number we found online largely on the basis of its name, hinting at the association with Sassoon. We will come again for its menu and cooking . . . and becuase they serve Napua gin from Finland, the very best gin there is (ok, in my view). The qualification that 'almost everything' was perfect refers to the raucous conversation of the people at the adjacent tale - unforgivable behaviour, but hardly the fault of the restaurant. We looked back on the meal and the evening with great warmth. This is a 'must' for future visits to this part of Kent, and we have already begun telling friends.
The best pub in Kent by far. Always love coming here for dinner as the food is always amazing and they always look after you.
The food and service was excellent we will definitely be back
Lovely as ever thank you - definitely a favourite with us
Food excellent service not great seamed that wanted get me out of door cleared away plates soon as put down cutlery
The food was stunning, presented in an incredible way and tasted amazing. The staff were so friendly and gave a warm service.
Our first visit to "The Poet" and it was great. A lovely charater pub, and lots of little rooms. The staff were lovely and very helpful. The wine list and bubbles by the glass, just great. Promoting English wines too. The menu was good, a nice mixture and some slightly unusual dishes. Something for everyone. Well worth a visit.
Food was amazing, along with the service, we can not wait to go back
Wonderful food. Service was perfect. We shall return! Thank you.
This was our 2nd visit in just a couple of months and we were not disappointed. All the staff are excellent, welcoming and attentive but not over the top.
The food is brilliant with an interesting and inventive menu.
This is certainly the best place to eat in the area, especially for a special occasion.
We are looking forward to the next time!
The only very slight downside is the parking, but that would not detract us from going.
One of the best restuarants I have been too. I would reccomend this resturant to anyone.
