In 1976 local musician and entrepreneur Harvey Platt had the idea to bring a slice of America to Norwich after working for and with the American war machine in South East Asia and a later visit to San Francisco to meeting up with former musician buddies.Harvey had the opportunity to purchase an old café caravan situated on Castle Meadow Norwich next to the old cattle market.Zaks opened in May 1976 serving the now famous chargrilled burgers in the “Original Zaks Caravan” wrapped in tin foil and cooked fresh to order in the American tradition.If it is an authentic American dining experience you are looking for then Zaks is your kind of place. They’re still making that claim, and the queue for their famous meat tray platters!Our pit runs low and slow for hours. Brisket gets a thick peppery bark and stays juicy enough to pull apart with a fork. Ribs come off the bone clean. Burnt ends are sticky, smoky and gone in minutes. Nothing here is a gimmick and nothing is rushed. It’s proper Texas-style BBQ, smoked properly and piled high.We buy our ingredients locally, keep our sauces secret and don’t do small portions. Come hungry, bring your mates, and order more than you think you need. Everyone does.Our new home is 101 Magdalen Street, which has a bigger smoker, a fresh look and the same attitude.
